Why Bother?!*
Michael Pollen brings up a good point. In his beginning sentences he describes how Al Gore in an Inconvenient Truth tells us that the way we solve this global warming crisis is by changing our light bulbs. That remake came with a laugh an a half because its comical to think that by doing one minuscule thing, this crisis will be averted. But I feel the structure and the style Pollen used to write this piece made it more relatable for your everyday average citizen to "get the point". He starts with the big issue of climate change and paints this massive picture explaining how it seems impossible and were all doomed. I think he hit the nail on the head, because I feel this is how every normal, every day working class citizen feels. By relating with the audience, he's able to connect more-so with his readers, allowing them to understand his perspective easier. People feel that this global warming issue is something that cannot be solved by just one person and that large intervention is the only way to solve it. I think the questionnaire in the beginning, while extremely poor worded, proved its point and showed us that, yes, not everyone has the answer for this problem and that there are many possible solutions that could attempt to solve this. By expressing the emotion of helplessness with the people, Pollen was able make his piece feel like he's talking directly too every single reader allowing them to feel a connection. After making this bond, Pollen does a great thing and finishes his article with hope. And for many of the people in the US, hope is really something can bring to the bank. US people are strong and reliable and if hope is given, then people strive to make efforts to attempt to do their best. By Pollen finishing his article saying that if everyone does their part and constructively makes an effort to cut back on our spending, then Americans have a fighting chance. I loved this article and everything that it stood for. The way it was written and the progression of hopelessness to victory is a message Americans can relate to and feel positive about. The emotional impact this article has, I believe, will spark an interest in the american public and by telling them to do something, will give Americans the push they need to start being better citizens if the planet. Pollen showed Americans that in all the sadness and loss hope, that there is a chance to strive if we put some effort in. I really enjoyed this article and I feel every person should read it because it is relatable and can incite change.
